Focussed Meditation vs Awareness Meditation


i am now 3 days in with the muse and so far i like it … i am having steady progress each day … it is very early yet but i am optimistic

i read an article which i cannot now find wherein the author spoke about the muse as a device that measures / teaches focussed meditation vs pure-awareness mediation

for example, it seems to me that one could merely be aware of the sounds at the seashore (i have only used the seashore mediation) and not focus on the breath if you so choose

would the meditation be the same as if you follow your breath and focus on your breath ?

what are the differences between the two approaches ?

i would appreciate any thoughts on this
