Measuring relaxation with Muse

#1

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a good formula to measure a person’s level of relaxation or calm using the available data from libmuse. Ideally it would return a value from 0 to 1 where 1 is very calm and 0 is not very calm. Currently I’m only measuring alpha score, but someone I know suggested that using a ratio between alpha and beta score would be better.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

I found an article at Pubmed on a biofeedback trial to improve Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8324040. They compared patients using frontal EMG biofeedback, biofeedback to increase EEG alpha, biofeedback to decrease EEG alpha, or a pseudomeditation control condition (alpha-theta?). They found that patients did best with increasing EEG alpha. The problem i see with including beta is that beta is about mental focus, so what would you want to do to increase relaxation, decrease focus or increase focus? I’m not sure what the relationship between relaxation and focus should be.
